Proliferating Performance, Propagating Print: The Many Lives of Restoration Drama

This essay explores the myriad stage and paper engagements with one of most popular plays Restoration period: William Davenant John Dryden's The Tempest, or Enchanted Island (1670). It examines flurry printed materials circulated in wake theatrical production, tracing Tempest's migration from performance to print back again. By charting how audiences readers encountered play beyond playhouse, Stephen Watkins argues that we will begin more accurately assess role commercial drama played cultural imaginative lives people it originally entertained.
